What Does a Trichologist Do?

A trichologist is a specialist in hair and scalp health, trained to identify and help manage conditions like hair thinning, scalp irritation, and excessive hair shedding. While not a medical doctor, a trichologist uses clinical tools and holistic assessments to support clients dealing with hair and scalp issues.

🔬 Expert Analysis & Diagnosis

We begin with a detailed consultation this involves discussing your concerns, medical history, lifestyle, and hair care routine. then using a digital microscope (trichoscope) to examine your scalp and hair follicles. This helps us understand the root causes of issues such as:

  • Evaluation of hair density, follicular health, and scalp condition

  • Itchy, dry, or oily scalp

  • Dermatitis

  • telogen effluvium

  • Alopecia

  • Psoriasis

🛠 Tailored Treatment Plans.

Based on your consultation and scalp analysis, we create a personalised treatment plan which may include:

  • In-clinic scalp treatments

  • Recommended topical applications or trichological-grade products

  • Home-care routines with targeted products

  • Guidance on appropriate hair care routines to reduce further damage

  • Diet and nutritional advice

Integrative Approach

We take a holistic yet evidence-informed approach, considering factors such as:

  • Diet and nutritional deficiencies

  • Health conditions

  • Medication

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Stress and lifestyle influences

  • Hair styling practices and chemical exposure

🧪 Reviewing Blood Test Results

As part of our trichology consultation process, we may review recent blood test results provided by your GP, dermatologist, or private lab. While we do not conduct or order blood tests ourselves, reviewing specific markers can help us build a more complete understanding of potential contributing factors to hair or scalp concerns.

We commonly consider the following indicators:

  • Iron / Ferritin levels

  • Vitamin D status

  • Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4)

  • Vitamin B12 and folate

  • Zinc and other micronutrients

  • Hormonal indicators (such as testosterone, DHEA, or prolactin)

These results are interpreted in a non-diagnostic and supportive context to help guide your hair and scalp care plan. If we identify concerns beyond our scope, we will advise you to follow up with your GP or an appropriate medical professional.

Our goal is to take a holistic and evidence-informed approach, combining scientific insight with practical, personalised care.

While we do not prescribe medications, Where appropriate, we may refer you to medical professionals for further investigation.
